How to Build a Raised Bed Garden with Pallets (for free)

Building a raised bed garden with pallets can be a fun and eco-friendly DIY project. Here are some steps to help you get started:

Materials:

  • Pallets (make sure they are safe to use for gardening and have not been treated with harmful chemicals)
  • Landscape fabric or weed barrier like cardboard
  • Soil
  • Plants or seeds
  • Optional: screws, hammer, drill, saw, staple gun, compost, fertilizer

Steps:

Choose a location for your raised bed garden. Make sure it gets enough sunlight and is easy to access for watering and harvesting.

Measure the size of the pallets and determine how many you will need to make the desired size of your garden bed. Pallets come in different sizes, so choose ones that fit your needs.

Lay down the landscape fabric or cardboard for weed barrier on the ground where you want to place the pallets. This will prevent weeds from growing up through the soil in your garden bed.

If you want to make the pallets taller, stack them on top of each other and secure them with screws or nails. You can also use a saw to cut the pallets to the desired size if needed.

Once your pallets are stacked and secured you CAN cut out some of the center pallet boards to make more room but it isn't required.  Line the inside of the outside edges of the pallets with the landscape fabric or weed barrier. This will prevent the soil from spilling out of the gaps between the pallet boards.  Or, remove a couple of the center pallet boards and attach them to the outside edges.

Fill the pallets with soil, compost, and fertilizer. Make sure the soil is level and packed tightly into the corners and edges of the pallets.

Plant your chosen plants or seeds in the soil. Make sure to space them out appropriately and water them regularly.

Optional: you can use a staple gun to attach the landscape fabric or weed barrier to the outsides sides of the pallets to keep the soil from spilling out.  Or attach material like metal or boards.

Pallets can also be used vertically or be painted.

With these steps, you should be able to build a raised bed garden with pallets. Happy gardening!
